The One Ring was forged in secret by the Dark Lord [[Sauron]] during the [[Second Age]] within the fires of [[Mount Doom]]. His intent was to create a master tool to control the bearers of the other [[Rings of Power]], concentrating his malice and a great portion of his own soul into the gold band. It is inscribed with Elven-runes in the Black Speech: "One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them." The Ring possesses a corruptive will of its own, seeking always to return to its creator. It grants its bearer invisibility by shifting them into the wraith-world, but at the cost of "thinning" their life force and eventually enslaving them to the shadow. After being lost for centuries in the Great River [[Anduin]], it was found by [[Gollum]], then [[Bilbo Baggins]], before passing to [[Frodo Baggins]] to be cast back into the fire from whence it came.
