Gandalf the Grey: The Grey Pilgrim

Gandalf, known also as [[Olórin]] in the West, was an [[Istari]] (Wizard) sent to [[Middle-earth]] around the year [[1000 Third Age]]. Unlike the warriors of Gondor or the lords of the Elves, Gandalf’s power was primarily one of inspiration and fire. He was the bearer of [[Narya]], the Red Ring, which gave him the ability to "rekindle hearts in a world grown cold."

The Wandering Wizard

For over two thousand years, Gandalf wandered Middle-earth, never settling in one place. While his peer [[Saruman the White]] established himself in the tower of [[Isengard]], Gandalf preferred the company of the simple and the stout-hearted. He developed a particular fondness for [[The Shire]] and its inhabitants, a choice that many of the "wise" found trivial, but which ultimately saved the world.

The Quest for Erebor and the One Ring

In [[2941 Third Age]], Gandalf orchestrated the quest to reclaim the [[Lonely Mountain]], selecting [[Bilbo Baggins]] as the final member of the company. It was during this journey that the [[One Ring]] was rediscovered. Gandalf’s tireless research and his interrogation of [[Gollum]] eventually confirmed the Ring's true nature, leading him to set [[Frodo Baggins]] on the path to [[Rivendell]].

The Fall and the Resurrection

During the journey of the [[Fellowship of the Ring]], Gandalf fell into the abyss of [[Moria]] while defending his companions from the [[Balrog]], known as [[Durin's Bane]].

Though his mortal form perished, his spirit was "sent back" by the [[Valar]] to finish his task. He returned as Gandalf the White, possessing a greater authority and radiance. He successfully cast [[Saruman]] out of the [[White Council]], broke the spell over King [[Théoden]] of [[Rohan]], and organized the final defense of [[Minas Tirith]].

The Captain of the West

In the final days of the war, Gandalf acted as the primary strategist for the Free Peoples. He counseled [[Aragorn]] to lead the host to the [[Black Gate]] as a feint, providing the necessary distraction for the Ring-bearers to reach [[Mount Doom]].

After the coronation of King [[Elessar]], Gandalf’s mission was complete. In [[3021 Third Age]], he joined the other Ring-bearers at the [[Grey Havens]]. As he boarded the ship, it was revealed that he had been the guardian of [[Narya]] all along. He was the only one of the five Wizards to stay true to his purpose, returning at last to the [[Undying Lands]].
