Originally called Khazad-dûm, Moria was the greatest underground kingdom of the Dwarves, located beneath the Three Peaks of the Misty Mountains. It was founded by Durin the Deathless in the [[First Age]]. The kingdom fell into darkness in the [[Third Age]] when the Dwarves delved too deep and awakened a [[Balrog]], known as Durin's Bane. Renamed "Moria" (The Black Pit) by the Elves, it became a place of dread. [[The Fellowship of the Ring]] was forced to travel through its halls, leading to the legendary bridge battle where [[Gandalf]] the Grey fell into the abyss.
