Denethor II: The Last Ruling Steward
Denethor II (born Third Age 2930) was the son of Ecthelion II. He was a man of ancient lineage, possessing the "Numenorean" air more strongly than almost any of his contemporaries. He was a master of lore, a cold and efficient strategist, and a father whose complicated relationships with his sons, Boromir and Faramir, would ultimately fracture his legacy.
The Rivalry of the Heirs
In his youth, Denethor served his father alongside a mysterious captain named Thorongil (who was actually Aragorn in disguise). While Thorongil was beloved by the people and the Wizard Gandalf, Denethor saw him as a rival to his father’s favor and a threat to the authority of the Stewards of Gondor. This early friction fueled Denethor’s lifelong distrust of Gandalf and his skepticism toward the return of the King.
The Peril of the Anárion Stone
Denethor’s greatest strength—his iron will—became his undoing. Unlike his predecessors, he dared to use the Palantír of Minas Tirith (the Anárion Stone) to spy on the Enemy.
While Sauron could not break Denethor's mind, the Dark Lord controlled what the Steward saw. By showing Denethor only the vast, overwhelming scale of the Orcish armadas and the hopelessness of the defense, Sauron slowly broke Denethor’s spirit. The Steward grew aged and grim before his time, convinced that the West was doomed to fall.
The Siege and the Pyre
The death of his favored son, Boromir, and the apparent mortal wounding of Faramir during the retreat from Osgiliath finally snapped Denethor's sanity. During the Siege of Gondor, he abandoned the defense of Minas Tirith, retreating to the Rath Dínen (the Silent Street) to commit suicide.
Believing Faramir to be beyond help and the city already lost, Denethor prepared a funeral pyre for them both. Though Pippin and Gandalf managed to save Faramir, Denethor perished in the flames, clutching the Palantír to his breast. He was the only Ruling Steward to die without a successor in office, as the crown was reclaimed shortly thereafter by Elessar.
Personality and Prowess
- Intellect: Denethor was said to be a match for Gandalf in lore and wisdom, though he lacked the Wizard's empathy.
- Asceticism: He wore mail beneath his robes at all times and ate sparingly, living the life of a soldier even in the high halls of the White Tower.
- The "Two Sons" Dynamic: His overt favoritism of Boromir’s martial strength over Faramir’s "wizard-like" gentleness remains one of the most tragic character dynamics in the archives.
