Théoden

The Lineage and Shadowed Reign of the King

Théoden, seventeenth King of the Mark, was of the noble line of Eorl the Young, born in the distant lands of Gondor before ascending to the throne of Rohan. His early years were marked by the strength of his father, Thengel, yet his own reign was long clouded by the subtle malice of the Enemy. As the influence of Saruman the White grew within the halls of Edoras, the King fell into a premature and unnatural senescence. His spirit was shackled by the whispers of Gríma Wormtongue, and the golden halls of Meduseld grew dim, mirroring the decay of the King’s own resolve while the borders of his realm were beset by the gathering darkness of Mordor.

The Awakening and the Restoration of the Mark

The turning of the tide arrived with the coming of the Grey Pilgrim, who pierced the veil of enchantment that had rendered the King a prisoner in his own house. Upon his restoration, Théoden cast aside the mantle of lethargy, revealing the fierce and noble heart of a warrior-king. He led his Riders forth to meet the peril of the Uruk-hai, securing a hard-won victory at the Hornburg within the deeps of Helm's Deep. This triumph served as a clarion call to the Free Peoples, signaling that the Rohirrim would not be cowed by the treachery of Isengard, and that the King of the Mark remained a steadfast bulwark against the shadow.

The Final Ride and the Fields of Pelennor

Driven by the ancient oaths of friendship between the House of Eorl and the Stewards of Gondor, Théoden answered the summons of the Red Arrow. He led his host in secret through the wild woods of the Drúadan, arriving at the eleventh hour to break the siege of Minas Tirith. On the vast expanse of the Pelennor Fields, the King rode with the fury of his ancestors, his spear felling the foes of the West until he was brought low by the Lord of the Nazgûl. Though his life was extinguished beneath the shadow of his own fallen steed, his death was not one of defeat; he perished in the light of a glorious victory, his name forever enshrined in the songs of his people as Théoden Ednew, the Renewer, who restored the honor of his lineage and secured the hope of the Third Age.
