Narsil

History

Narsil, known as the "Sword of Elendil," was a legendary longsword forged by the dwarf-smith Telchar of Nogrod during the First Age. Its name is derived from the Quenya roots nár ("fire") and thil ("white light"), symbolizing the Sun and the Moon. The blade remained in the possession of the Lords of Andúnië for generations before being brought to Middle-earth by Elendil during the Downfall of Númenor.

The War of the Last Alliance

During the War of the Last Alliance, Narsil served as the primary weapon of the High King Elendil. In the climactic siege of Barad-dûr, Elendil fell in battle against Sauron, and the blade was shattered into shards beneath the weight of the Dark Lord. Subsequently, Elendil's son, Isildur, utilized the hilt-shard of Narsil to sever the One Ring from Sauron's hand, effectively ending the Second Age.

Significance and Reforging

Following the disaster at the Gladden Fields, the shards of Narsil were recovered and preserved as a sacred heirloom of the Dúnedain of the North. For centuries, the shards remained at Rivendell under the guardianship of Elrond. Upon the advent of the War of the Ring, the shards were reforged by the smiths of the Elves into a new blade, named Andúril, the "Flame of the West." This act served as a potent symbol of the return of the King and the restoration of the throne of Gondor and Arnor, signifying the legitimacy of Aragorn II Elessar.
