Armenelos

The City of the Kings

Upon the verdant isle of Númenor, amidst the central region of Arandor, there rose the Golden City of Armenelos. It was the seat of the Sceptre and the dwelling place of the Kings, built by the Edain who were granted the land by the Valar as a reward for their service against Morgoth in the First Age. The city was a marvel of stone and artifice, dominated by the high tower of the King’s House, which pierced the clouds and stood as a testament to the majesty of the Dúnedain in their prime. Within its walls, the White Tree, Nimloth, was planted in the King’s court, a living symbol of the grace bestowed upon the Men of the West.

The Shadow of Pride

As the centuries turned, the shadow of mortality grew long over the hearts of the Númenóreans, and the splendor of Armenelos became tainted by the pride of its rulers. It was here that the influence of Sauron, brought as a captive from Middle-earth, took root. Under the sway of the Dark Lord, the city was transformed; the White Tree was hewn down and burned in a sacrificial fire, and a great temple was raised to the worship of Darkness. The city, once a beacon of light, became the center of the King’s Men, where the Dúnedain turned their backs upon the Valar and sought to conquer death through the might of their fleets.

The Final Doom

The significance of Armenelos reached its tragic zenith when Ar-Pharazôn, the last King of Númenor, launched his armada against the Undying Lands. The city stood as the silent witness to the hubris of a race that had forgotten its origin. When the world was bent and the sea rose to swallow the island, the Golden City was consumed by the abyss. The pride of the Dúnedain, their archives, their monuments, and the very ground upon which they walked were cast into the deep. Thus, the history of the city ended in the Downfall, leaving only the memory of its former glory to be carried across the waves by the Faithful, who fled the ruin to establish the realms of Arnor and Gondor in Middle-earth.
