Gimli (born Third Age 2879) was a Dwarf of the royal line of Durin’s Folk. He was the son of Glóin, one of the companions of Bilbo Baggins during the Quest of Erebor. Though at the time he was deemed too young to join the quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from Smaug, he later earned his place in history as the only Dwarf member of the The Fellowship of the Ring.
The Fellowship and the Lock-bearer
Gimli traveled to Rivendell with his father to seek counsel from Elrond regarding the shadow falling over the North and the messages of Sauron. There, he was chosen to represent the Dwarves in the quest to destroy The One Ring. Initially, Gimli harbored the traditional Dwarven animosity toward Elves, particularly Legolas, whose father Thranduil had once imprisoned Gimli’s father. However, during their time in Lothlórien, Gimli was so moved by the beauty and grace of Galadriel that he became her lifelong champion. When she asked what gift he would desire, he asked for a single strand of her golden hair. She granted him three, earning him the title "Lock-bearer." This act—and his subsequent deep friendship with Legolas—symbolized a healing of the ancient rift between their peoples.
The War of the Ring
Gimli proved himself a formidable warrior during the War of the Ring. Armed with his broad-bladed axe, he fought with distinction at the Battle of the Hornburg in Helm’s Deep, where he famously won a friendly orc-slaying contest against Legolas (42 to 41). He accompanied Aragorn and Legolas through the Paths of the Dead, fought at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, and stood before the Black Gate of Mordor. His love for the beauty of the earth was most evident in his description of the Glittering Caves behind Helm’s Deep. His poetic praise for the caverns was so profound it moved even the Elves, who usually viewed Dwarven interests as purely industrial.
After the War and the Final Journey
Following the defeat of Sauron and the coronation of Aragorn, Gimli led a group of Dwarves from Erebor to establish a new Dwarven kingdom in the Glittering Caves, becoming its first Lord. He worked to repair the physical damage caused by the war, including forging new gates of mithril and steel for Minas Tirith. In the year 120 of the Fourth Age, after the death of King Elessar (Aragorn), Gimli did something unprecedented. Driven by his desire to see Galadriel once more and his bond with Legolas, he sailed into the West. He is the only Dwarf known to have been permitted to set foot in the Undying Lands, a grace likely granted through the intercession of Galadriel and his status as a Ring-bearer (by association).
