The Emergence and Radiance of the Two Trees
In the elder days, when the world was young and the light of the stars shone upon the untamed earth, Yavanna, the Giver of Fruits, sang a song of power in the green mounds of Ezellohar. Beneath the gaze of the Valar, the Two Trees, Telperion and Laurelin, sprang forth from the earth, bathed in the dew of the primordial waters. Telperion, the Elder, bore leaves of dark green that shimmered with silver beneath, and his boughs shed a dew of silver light that gathered in the crystal basins of Varda. Laurelin, the Younger, was adorned with leaves of tender gold, and from her flowers there fell a rain of golden fire. Together, they brought the first true morning to the land of Valinor, casting a radiance that was neither sun nor moon, but a pure, unblemished illumination that nurtured all things living within the Blessed Realm.
The Discord of Melkor and the Darkening of Valinor
The beauty of the Trees was the envy of Melkor, the Great Enemy, who sought to mar the works of the Valar and shroud the world in his own malice. In his pride, he conspired with the monstrous spider Ungoliant, a creature of insatiable hunger and ancient shadow. Under the cover of a veil of darkness woven by Ungoliant, Melkor struck at the very heart of the light. With his black spear, he pierced the trunks of the Trees, while Ungoliant drained their sap and drank the living radiance from the wells of Varda. As the light faded, the Trees withered, their silver and gold turning to grey ash, and a terrible, suffocating gloom descended upon the land of the Eldar. This was the Darkening of Valinor, the moment when the light of the world was stolen and the first great sorrow was etched into the history of the Arda.
The Legacy and Ultimate Fate of the Light
Though the Trees were slain, their essence was not entirely lost to the void. Fëanor, the greatest of the Noldorin craftsmen, had captured the blended light of the Trees within the three Silmarils, the hallowed jewels that would become the catalyst for the wars of the First Age. Yavanna, weeping for her fallen creations, sought to revive them, but she could extract only one last fruit from Laurelin and one last flower from Telperion. These were entrusted to Aulë the Smith, who fashioned vessels to carry them across the sky; thus were born the Moon, the vessel of the silver flower, and the Sun, the vessel of the golden fruit. To this day, the Sun and Moon remain the last remnants of that primordial brilliance, guiding the children of Ilúvatar until the final end of all things, when the world shall be remade and the Two Trees shall bloom once more in the light of the Ainulindalë.
