The Genesis of the Ainur and the Shaping of Arda

Before the foundations of the world were laid, before the music of the spheres first stirred the silence of the Void, there existed Eru Ilúvatar, the One. From his thought sprang the Ainur, the Holy Ones, the offspring of his mind. Among these celestial spirits, those of greatest power and majesty descended into the newly fashioned Eä to bring order to the chaos of creation. These were the Valar, the Lords of the West and the Powers of the World, who bound themselves to Arda to prepare the dwelling place for the Children of Ilúvatar. They entered the world in the beginning of Time, and their labor was vast, for they had to contend with the malice of Melkor, the mightiest of their kin, who sought to mar the symmetry of the Great Music and claim the dominion of the earth for his own.

The Architecture of the World and the Stewardship of the Valar

The Valar, led by Manwë Súlimo, the King of the Air, labored through the long ages of the Lamps and the Trees to bring form to the wild elements of the world. Each Vala embodied a facet of the divine intent: Ulmo, Lord of Waters, who remained ever-watchful in the deeps; Aulë the Smith, who fashioned the mountains and the foundations of the earth; Varda, the Lady of the Stars, whose light brought hope to the darkness; and Oromë, the Hunter, who traversed the wild forests. Together, they established their realm in the Undying Lands of Valinor, shielded by the mountains of the Pelóri, and there they fostered the light of the Two Trees of Valinor, Telperion and Laurelin, which illuminated the world before the rising of the Sun and Moon. Their stewardship was not merely one of dominion, but of guardianship, for they held the world in trust against the encroaching shadow of the Great Enemy.

The Strife of Ages and the Intervention of the Powers

The history of the Valar is irrevocably entwined with the sorrows of the Middle-earth. They brought the Eldar to the shores of the West, yet they could not prevent the tragedy of the Noldor or the theft of the Silmarils by the Dark Lord. Throughout the First Age, the Valar remained largely sequestered in Valinor, until the desperate plea of Eärendil the Mariner moved their hearts to pity. It was then that the Host of the West marched forth in the War of Wrath, shattering the tyranny of Angband and casting Morgoth into the Void beyond the walls of the world. In later ages, though they withdrew their direct presence, they did not forsake the inhabitants of Arda; they sent the Istari, the five Wizards, to counsel and guide the Free Peoples against the rising malice of Sauron, the lieutenant of the fallen Vala.

The Final Prophecy and the Renewal of Arda

It is inscribed in the deepest scrolls of our archives that the influence of the Valar shall not cease until the end of all things. According to the prophecy of Mandos, the Doom of the World, there shall come the Dagor Dagorath, the final battle wherein the shadow shall be gathered for the last time. It is foretold that the Valar shall return with all their might, and the world shall be broken and remade. In that ultimate renewal, the ancient discords shall be purged, and the light of the Two Trees shall be rekindled. The Valar, having fulfilled their long and weary stewardship, shall see the Children of Ilúvatar transcend their mortal bounds, and the Second Music of the Ainur shall commence, far more glorious than the first, wherein the true intent of the Creator shall be brought to its perfect and eternal fruition.
