The Sun-lit Province of Anórien
To the north and east of the White Mountains lies the fair province of Anórien, the Land of the Sun. It is a region of ancient dignity, stretching from the borders of the Rohan gap in the west to the confluence of the Anduin and the Erui in the east. In the early days of the Third Age, when Elendil and his sons first set foot upon the shores of Middle-earth, this province was established as the heartland of the southern realm, serving as the northern march of Gondor. It was here that the kings of old maintained their watch, and it was here that the light of the West was preserved against the encroaching shadows of the East.
The lineage of Anórien is inextricably bound to the House of Anárion, the younger son of the High King. While his brother Isildur looked toward the northern realm, Anárion took up his mantle in the south, and his descendants held the province as their ancestral demesne. The land was dotted with the beacons of the North-way, a chain of fire-signals constructed to summon aid from the riders of the plains should the darkness of Mordor ever threaten the integrity of the realm. These beacons, standing upon the spurs of the Ered Nimrais, remain the most enduring testament to the strategic foresight of the early stewards and kings who understood that the defense of the capital, Minas Tirith, began at the borders of this province.
Throughout the long centuries of the Third Age, Anórien served as the primary theater of war whenever the Enemy sought to bypass the river defenses. The province bore the brunt of the Great Plague and the subsequent invasions of the Wainriders, yet its people remained steadfast. It was in the fields of Anórien that the armies of the West gathered during the final days of the War of the Ring. When the beacons were lit, the riders of the Mark crossed the borders of the province, riding through the hidden paths of the Drúadan Forest to reach the Pelennor Fields. The soil of Anórien has been watered by the blood of both the Men of Gondor and their allies, sanctifying the land as a bastion of resistance against the malice of the Dark Lord.
Following the restoration of the King, the significance of Anórien shifted from a militarized march to a flourishing province of the Reunited Kingdom. Under the reign of Elessar, the land was healed of the scars of war, and the ancient ties between the stewards of the land and the crown were renewed. Its history is not merely one of conflict, but of endurance; it stands as the bridge between the glory of the Númenórean exiles and the peace of the Fourth Age. Though the ages may turn and the memory of men may fade, the sun shall continue to rise over the green hills of Anórien, marking the legacy of those who held the line when all hope seemed lost.
