Annúminas

The Foundation of the City of Kings

In the dawn of the Third Age, following the ruin of Númenor and the escape of the Faithful across the Sundering Seas, Elendil the Tall established the realm of Arnor in the North-lands. Upon the shores of the glimmering lake Nenuial, he commanded the construction of Annúminas, the City of the West. It was designed to be the seat of the High Kings, a place of white stone and noble architecture that mirrored the splendor of the lost civilization of the Edain. Here, the Sceptre of Annúminas was kept, the primary symbol of royal authority in the North-kingdom, and the city stood as a beacon of wisdom and order amidst the wilder expanses of Eriador.

The Zenith and the Shadow of Decline

For many centuries, Annúminas flourished as the heart of the Dúnedain, housing the archives of their lore and the throne of the High King. It was a city of great beauty, where the light of the stars reflected upon the waters of Nenuial, and the lineage of Isildur held sway over the vast territories of the North. However, as the population of the Dúnedain dwindled and the shadows of the East began to lengthen, the city’s prominence waned. The royal court eventually shifted its residence to the more strategically situated city of Fornost, leaving the halls of the ancient capital to fall into silence and slow decay.

The Ruin and the Restoration

By the middle of the Third Age, Annúminas had become a desolate place of crumbling masonry and overgrown courtyards, its former glory surrendered to the encroaching wilderness. For generations, it remained a ghost of the past, a testament to the fading majesty of the North-kingdom. Yet, the memory of the city was never truly extinguished from the hearts of the Dúnedain. Following the War of the Ring and the crowning of Elessar, the King returned to the lands of his forefathers. In the early years of the Fourth Age, he oversaw the restoration of the ancient capital, rebuilding its white walls and restoring its halls, so that the City of the West might once again serve as a seat of majesty for the reunited realm of Gondor and Arnor.
