The Chronicles of the Undying Lands: A History of Aman

In the elder days, before the shaping of the sun or the kindling of the moon, there existed the Blessed Realm of Aman, the Uttermost West, separated from the mortal spheres by the sundering expanse of the Belegaer. It was here, in the land of Valinor, that the Valar, the Powers of Arda, established their dwelling after the ruin of Almaren. Aman was fashioned as a sanctuary of light and peace, shielded by the mountain-wall of the Pelóri, whose highest peak, the Taniquetil, served as the throne of Manwë Súlimo, the King of Arda. Within this fortified expanse, the Valar cultivated the beauty of the world, and under the radiance of the Two Trees of Valinor, Laurelin and Telperion, the realm flourished in a perpetual spring of golden and silver light.

It was into this hallowed geography that the Eldar, the Firstborn of Ilúvatar, were summoned. Following the long journey from Cuiviénen, led by the emissaries Ingwë, Finwë, and Elwë, the kindreds of the Vanyar, the Noldor, and the Teleri set foot upon the shores of Eldamar. There, under the tutelage of the Valar, the Elves reached the zenith of their craft and wisdom. It was in the workshops of Tirion upon Túna that Fëanor, the greatest of the Noldor, wrought the Silmarils, capturing the very essence of the Two Trees within crystalline form. Yet, the peace of Aman was destined to be shattered by the malice of Melkor, who, having sown discord among the Noldor, conspired with the spider Ungoliant to extinguish the light of the Trees, plunging the world into darkness and stealing the jewels that held the light of the world.

The subsequent flight of the Noldor, led by the house of Fëanor in pursuit of their stolen treasures, marked the tragic severance of the Eldar from their blissful home. As the Ages turned and the wars of Beleriand laid waste to the mortal lands, Aman remained a distant, fading memory to those who lingered in Middle-earth. The Valar, having decreed the Ban of the Valar, forbade the return of the Exiles, and the path to the West was shrouded in the Enchanted Isles and the Shadowy Seas. Only through the singular intervention of Eärendil the Mariner, who bore the light of a Silmaril across the firmament, was the grace of the Valar stirred once more, leading to the War of Wrath and the final overthrow of Morgoth.

Following the cataclysmic Downfall of Númenor, when the hubris of men sought to claim the Undying Lands by force, the very geometry of the world was altered by the command of Eru. Aman was removed from the circles of the world, set apart beyond the reach of mortal navigation. Henceforth, it became a realm accessible only to those of Elven lineage, or to the Ring-bearers, who, by the grace of the Valar and the mercy of the Eldar, were granted passage upon the White Ship. Aman remains the eternal sanctuary, the final harbor where the weariness of the world is cleansed, and where the history of Arda is preserved in the halls of Mandos, awaiting the eventual remaking of the world and the breaking of the final silence.
